The luxury maternity retreat called, asking if I was satisfied with their service during my stay.
I was utterly bewildered.
I was only eight months pregnant, my baby hadn’t even arrived, let alone checking in anywhere.
I demanded to know what was going on from my husband, Liam, who had been so actively communicating with the retreat.
He looked at me with a feigned apology.
“Honey, that luxury maternity retreat costs 0-020,000! We can’t afford that. They must have contacted the wrong person.”
“You just relax at home. I’ll make sure you’re perfectly comfortable!”
I didn’t waste another breath on him. The owner of the luxury maternity retreat was my older sister, Scarlett. I called her directly.
“Scarlett, can you please check which conniving woman Liam let check into *my* luxury maternity retreat, impersonating me? I’m going to catch them!”
What a joke, “contacted the wrong person.” That was utterly ridiculous.
My sister had contacted me as soon as she knew I was pregnant, specifically reserving the highest-tier maternity package for me.
No need to pay, just check in when the time came.
When the luxury maternity retreat called, I had confirmed it repeatedly.
Someone else was staying there, and I simply couldn’t swallow that.
Speaking of, when I first mentioned wanting to stay at the luxury maternity retreat,
Liam had protested, “Loads of women have their babies and just chill at home. Why do *you* have to be so difficult?”
But I had the means, didn’t I?
I hailed a cab and headed straight to the luxury maternity retreat.
I arrived in less than twenty minutes, and there were quite a few people inquiring about packages.
I waited a while until the front desk wasn’t so busy, then stepped forward to ask.
“Hi, I’m Ms. Aurora, the one you just called for a service review.”
The front desk attendant looked at me, hesitating.
“Ms. Aurora? Didn’t you already go back to your room?”
My face instantly fell.
The attendant continued.
“Just a moment ago, Ms. Aurora even specifically thanked us for our thoughtful service.”
Someone had actually checked in under my name.
I gritted my teeth.
“But *I* am the Ms. Aurora who should be staying here, Aurora Davis.”
The attendant scrutinized me from head to toe, her eyes showing disdain.
“Ma’am, you’re not trying to stir up trouble because you can’t afford our luxury maternity retreat, are you?”
“Ms. Aurora checked in with her husband.”
“Even if we don’t know Ms. Aurora well, we certainly know Mr. Liam, who’s been handling all the arrangements, right? Don’t try to pull a scam here.”
I was stunned.
My husband had apparently become someone else’s husband too.
As I was about to confirm with the front desk again, a familiar figure stepped out of the elevator.
She wore the half-million dollar bracelet my brother gave me on her wrist, and the million-dollar diamond necklace my sister gave me around her neck.
Although she was wearing the uniform maternity gown provided by the retreat, every strand of her hair was perfectly styled.
Yet, as far as I knew, she was just a regular intern at Liam’s company, Chloe Miller.
The front desk pointed at Chloe.
“This is Ms. Aurora. I advise you to leave quickly.”
I didn’t move, my face grim as I stared at Chloe.
Chloe saw me too, her face changing dramatically as she hurried towards me.
“Wh… what a coincidence, sis. Are you here to rest too?”
She tried to push me into a corner.
“Let’s talk somewhere else, we don’t want to bother them.”
I found it amusing. She used to gush ‘Aurora-sis’ with such fake warmth, hanging on my every word.
Now, terrified of being exposed, she could only manage a shaky “sis.”
I yanked her hand away, stepping back, showing no mercy.
“Chloe, aren’t you going to explain why the luxury maternity retreat my family booked for me was taken by you, using my identity, no less?”
“And why are my bracelet and necklace on you?”
I deliberately raised my voice so everyone around could hear.
All eyes snapped towards us, and Chloe’s face twisted in an ugly expression.
But quickly, tears welled up in her eyes.
“Sis, what are you talking about? My husband booked this luxury maternity retreat for me because he cares about how hard I’m working with the pregnancy and birth.”
“And the necklace and bracelet? My husband bought those too, of course. How could they be yours?”
She looked me up and down, a look of distress on her face.
“Sis, is it because your husband isn’t treating you very well? Are you suffering from prenatal depression and imagining things?”
The people around us started looking at me strangely.
“Is that what prenatal depression looks like? She looks completely delusional to me.”
“I heard Ms. Aurora’s maternity package was over 0-020,000. That woman looks so cheap, she probably can’t even afford eight thousand.”
“I wonder if she’s been driven crazy by her poor husband or if she’s just jealous of Ms. Aurora, trying to cause trouble.”
I was only wearing a simple maternity dress, not shabbily dressed at all.
I ignored their wild speculations, sneering at Chloe.
“I never knew you were so good at stealing other people’s things.”
Without hesitation, I turned to the front desk.
“Excuse me, when this lady checked in, I assume she provided ID for verification, correct? I’d really like to know how she passed verification.”
The front desk attendant froze.
“Ms. Aurora said she lost her ID, so we didn’t use it for identity verification.”
“Her husband, Mr. Liam, was with her the whole time. That couldn’t be fake, right?”
I raised an eyebrow, amused, looking at the attendant.
“Just because ‘Mr. Liam’ is ‘her husband,’ you let her check in without verifying her identity?”
“What, you think men don’t lie? Don’t you think that’s a bit careless?”
The attendant opened her mouth, but was speechless.
Chloe looked disapproving, speaking earnestly.
“Sis, they’re just employees. Why are you making things so difficult for them?”
“Honestly, you just get the kind of maternity care your financial situation allows. You don’t have to be like this.”
She made it sound like I was being utterly unreasonable.
Just then, her phone rang.
The caller ID showed ‘Husband.’
Chloe’s expression stiffened slightly.
Given that reaction, it was probably Liam on the other end.
I scoffed.
“Go on, answer it. I’d love to hear how Liam plans to explain himself!”
Chloe answered the phone, putting it on speaker.
She pretended to be nervous, but a flicker of triumph was in her eyes.
She whined pitifully into the phone.
“Honey, please come to the luxury maternity retreat! Someone is insisting I’m not your wife, claiming *she* is.”
“She’s also saying that the luxury maternity retreat gave *her* maternity package to me, and that they’re negligent.”
Chloe’s voice grew more and more aggrieved, even cracking with a sob.
Liam’s angry voice boomed from the other end of the phone.
“What’s she doing now, going to the luxury maternity retreat to bully you?!”
“Don’t be scared, I’ll be right there!”
“Going crazy.” With that one phrase, Liam sealed my fate.
It made everyone even more convinced that I was truly making a scene.
Their gazes were laced with mockery, as if I were a clown.
At the same time, some people went to comfort Chloe, telling her not to bother with a “lunatic” like me.
Chloe lowered her eyes, biting her lip as she whispered.
“My husband will be here any minute. He spoils me rotten, otherwise he wouldn’t have booked this 0-020,000 luxury maternity retreat without a second thought.”
“You should really leave. Otherwise, it’ll get messy, and you’ll be upset.”
Her words sounded incredibly thoughtful, but they were pure provocation.
My teeth were practically grinding into dust. Those two vile traitors!
Liam arrived quickly.
He rushed into the luxury maternity retreat, immediately shoving me aside.
He embraced Chloe, soothing her gently.
“Don’t be scared, honey, your husband is here. I won’t let you suffer any injustice.”
I, with my heavily pregnant belly, nearly fell to the floor.
Fortunately, at the last moment, I grabbed onto the front desk counter. Otherwise, the consequences would have been unthinkable.
Rage filled my chest.
Chloe wrapped her arms around Liam’s waist, giving him a passionate kiss.
“Honey, you’re the best. You tell her, I can’t get through to her.”
Liam finally spared me a glance.
There wasn’t even a hint of guilt on his face. He simply released Chloe and stepped forward, slapping me hard across the face.
“Chloe Miller, have some dignity! I only gave you extra attention at work because you’re pregnant, just like my wife!”
“And you actually came to the luxury maternity retreat to bully my wife!”
I clutched my stinging cheek, feeling as though the Liam before me was a complete stranger.
Before I came to the luxury maternity retreat, he could at least pretend to patiently comfort me.
Now, he’d actually laid a hand on me!
Even though I was his pregnant wife.
Right. Ever since I became pregnant, Liam seemed to grow more and more impatient.
He always claimed he was working overtime, asking me to be understanding and not to make a fuss.
Chloe’s name also came up frequently in his conversations.
It all made sense now.
How could I have been so blind to his rotten, foolish nature?
I miraculously calmed down, asking.
“Liam, say those words again.”
“Who am I? And who is she?”
A flicker of panic finally appeared in Liam’s eyes, but he still spoke with righteous indignation.
“Are you deaf? She’s my wife, Aurora Davis. You’re just a colleague of mine, Chloe Miller.”
“Listen, ma’am, just because *you* couldn’t marry well doesn’t mean you get to obsess over me like a madwoman just because I treat my wife well, does it?”
Everyone started murmuring.
“So she really is crazy. It’s tragic how her trash husband drove her to this.”
“But what did Mr. Liam do wrong? Being harassed by someone like this is disgusting.”
It seemed he was determined to protect Chloe.
But did he really think a few words could prove anything?
I pulled out my ID and flung it forward.
“I say I’m Aurora Davis. I have an ID, does she?”
Liam and Chloe’s expressions froze.
Chloe tugged at Liam’s arm, as if seeking help.
Liam suddenly lunged, snatched my ID, and threw it into a trash can, fuming.
“Chloe Miller! Are you done with this charade?!”
“Last time you pulled out a fake marriage certificate to disgust me! Now you’re trying to impersonate my wife with a fake ID!”
“Have some dignity, okay? Don’t think you can get away with anything just because you’re pregnant!”
The onlookers’ gazes at me became even more complicated.
Someone even suggested calling the police.
I was stunned.
Liam was truly thorough. Seeing me pull out my ID, he worried I’d produce a marriage certificate too.
So he just declared everything fake.
Now, I almost wished that marriage certificate *was* fake.
Chloe breathed a sigh of relief, nestling into Liam’s arms.
“Sis, if your life isn’t working out, I can introduce you to a divorce lawyer. How can you even think of impersonating someone else and stealing their husband?”
She put heavy emphasis on “divorce,” clearly hoping Liam and I would split so she could take my place.
Liam kissed Chloe’s forehead, intimately.
Towards me, he was utterly cold and heartless.
“Now get out! If this happens again, don’t blame me for calling the police directly!”
Then he looked at the front desk attendant.
“Excuse me, please ask security to escort this crazy woman out.”
“Who knows what dangerous stunts she might pull next? It wouldn’t be good if she harmed other pregnant mothers staying here.”
He lied without a shred of shame.
The onlookers quickly chimed in.
“Exactly, get this lunatic out of here! If she keeps making a scene, I’m going to complain!”
The front desk immediately called for security, instructing them to remove me.
To protect the luxury maternity retreat’s reputation, the security guards stepped forward to grab my arms.
I frowned, backing away repeatedly.
But Chloe had somehow circled behind me and shoved me hard.
I stumbled and fell to the ground, a searing pain shooting through my belly, and a warm gush flowed beneath me.
Chloe gasped, covering her mouth.
“Oh dear, I just tried to help you up because you looked unsteady. How did you fall?”
“Everyone, please be my witness, she’s completely slandering me!”
My face turned ashen from the pain, and the blood stained the floor beneath me.
Liam saw me like this, hesitated for a moment, but did nothing.
My heart turned to ice. I no longer had any hope for him.
I fumbled with trembling hands for my phone to call an ambulance.
Liam suddenly slapped my phone out of my hand.
“Don’t even *think* about calling the police! This was *your* fall, it has nothing to do with the luxury maternity retreat!”
My belly cramped even harder, the pain making my vision blur.
“My baby! I just want to save my baby!”
Liam remained unmoved, kicking my phone further away. The luxury maternity retreat staff, fearing a lawsuit, also remained motionless.
I was utterly isolated and helpless.
I struggled to prop myself up, trying to crawl towards the exit.
Chloe then stepped on my hand, her expression triumphant.
“Sis, if you sign a statement saying this has nothing to do with me, or the luxury maternity retreat, I’ll help you call an ambulance.”
I was in too much pain to speak, trembling all over.
Just then, my sister, Scarlett, strode into the luxury maternity retreat.
“Aurora! I found out! That bastard Liam is cheating on you, and his mistress’s baby is two months older than yours!”
“And he gave *your* maternity package, the one I reserved, to his mistress! Just wait until I get my hands on her!”
Then, the moment she saw me, her voice instantly cut off.
The front desk attendant’s face went white.
“Bo… boss…”
