Suncor Energy resumed production at the Terra Nova oil field, located approximately 350km southeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, the company reported on 3 September 2014.
Production resumed following planned maintenance on the field’s FPSO facility, which began on 6 August and lasted four weeks.
Discovered in 1984, Terra Nova’s FPSO began production in 2002. Suncor said Terra Nova was the first development in North America to use an FPSO in a harsh weather environment. The FPSO is a double-hulled, ice-reinforced vessel with five thrusters and a global dynamic positioning system, which reduces the impact of waves by allowing the FPSO to change to more favorable headings in high winds and storms. The Terra Nova FPSO measures 292.2m long and 45.5m wide, and can store 960,000 bo.
The Terra Nova field is includes the Graben, East Flank and Far East blocks.
Suncor operates Terra Nova with 37.675% interest. Its partners ExxonMobil (19%), Statoil (15%), Husky Energy (13%), Murphy Oil (10.475%), Mosbacher Operating (3.85%), and Chevron Canada (1%).
