BMT riser monitoring for Total's Egina

BMT Scientific Marine Services (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group, has been selected by Saipem to supply the riser integrity monitoring systems for Total's Egina development located 150km off the coast of Nigeria.

The Egina field, discovered in 2003, is in Oil Mining Lease 130, in 1750m water depth, about 130km south of Port Harcourt and 20km southwest of the Akpo field, located on the same license. The project, which involves a floating production, storage and offloading vessel will have the capacity to produce 200,000bbl/d and first oil is expected in 2017.

Riser integrity monitoring systems measure bending moments and tensile forces in risers in order to provide end users with an understanding of the risers' condition. Data from these systems are then used to verify riser design models, ultimately leading to long-term improvements in riser design.

The Egina project will feature systems that incorporate BMT’s ROV-Serviceable Subsea Strain Sensor Assembly. This allows for continuous monitoring and data collection, preserving the absolute bending and tension measurement while a single sensor is removed and replaced.

Saipem signed an EPIC contract with Total Upstream Nigeria Ltd for its subsea development. The scope of work includes engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation, and pre-commissioning of 52km of oil production and water injection flow lines, 12 flexible jumpers, 20km of gas export pipelines, 80km of umbilicals, and mooring and offloading systems.

Marine activities will be performed throughout 2016, continuing to the second quarter of 2017.
