Repsol Norge awarded DeepOcean a contract for provision of engineering, procurement, removal and disposal (EPRD) of Varg Subsea facilities in the North Sea.

The scope of work cover subsea pre-decommissioning survey, recovery of FPSO mooring lines, anchor piles, risers, midwater-arch buoy and subsea structures, as well as onshore disposal and recycling of the recovered items.
“The new construction vessel Edda Freya, arriving in our fleet in 2Q 2016 has been specially designed for multiple types of subsea operations, and hence prove very cost efficient for subject scope,” Rolf Ivar Sørdal, DeepOcean commercial director for subsea services in the Greater North Sea said.
Due to oil prices, Respol decided in February to shut down the Varg field. In addition, Repsol terminated the contract with Teekay for the FPSO Petrojarl Varg, which is set to leave the area on 1 August.
Varg is located 200km west of Stavanger in Block 15/12 in 84m water depth. Start up at the field began in December 1998, and was discovered in 1984.
Repsol, though its Norwegian arm Repsol Norge, operates Varg with 65% stake. Partners include Petoro (30%) and Det norse oljeselskap (5%).
According to a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) released earlier this month, about 65 MMboe will be left untapped offshore Norway due to the early shut down of fields and the failure of the Vette project to meet economic margins.
